Science-based careers in the National Park Service have been generally under-represented when it comes to racial and ethnic diversity. The Mosaics in Science Diversity Internship Program provides youth with backgrounds in the sciences, technology, and engineering with an opportunity to work with the National Park Service. The internship seeks college undergrads and graduate students; individuals from demographic groups under-represented in the NPS workforce are especially encouraged to apply.
Mosaics participants have the opportunity to work at National Parks and gain valuable work experience. Interns are paid a $4,800 stipend, all travel costs, and are provided housing (or a housing allowance) for the duration of the project.
- Age 18 to 35
- Be a US citizen or legal resident
- Have a strong interest — or relevant experience — in areas pertaining to science, technology, engineering, natural resources, or other related fields
- Be a member of an underrepresented group in STEM fields (Asian, African American, Native American, Latino/Hispanic, and/or Pacific Islander)
- Encourage diverse youth to study and pursue careers in STEM fields
- Introduce program participants to science careers in the National Park Service
- Increase relevance, diversity, and inclusion in the NPS workplace
Applications will be reviewed and rated according to the following criteria – relevant educational and work experience, oral and written communication skills, maturity, professionalism, technical knowledge and expertise, evidence of adaptability and adventurousness, and ability to work effectively with diverse audiences. Final candidates will undergo a background check before beginning their assignment.

- Placement decisions will generally be made by April.
- The paid 10-week internship period will begin in May or earlier and conclude in August 2017, depending on specific requirements of the project site.
