The accumulation of plastic and plastic pollution have become a worldwide epidemic and a primary threat to birds across the globe. In 2019, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) focuses on fighting plastic pollution, adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle and protecting birds from the consequences of plastic exposure. Designed by Cuban Artist, Arnaldo Toledo Sotolongo, the 12 bird species featured on the WMBD 2019 Shirt represent diverse groups of birds, the habitats they use, and their foraging behaviors. Despite their differences, each of these birds and their habitats have been impacted by plastic pollution.
The WMBD 2019 Shirts are made from organic US-grown cotton, recycled polyester, and a form of viscose made from sustainably harvested beech trees. The production of these shirts requires 75% less water than a conventional t-shirt, saves 6.4oz of crude oil per shirt and does not require the chemical treatments most alternatives do. In addition, each shirt contains the equivalent of 6 plastic bottles!! Join the fight against plastic pollution on behalf of migratory birds with your new WMBD shirt!
